DescriptionHazlitt drew inspiration from children's art. He also was very much influenced by abstract painter Richard Tuttle (b. 1941) and by Chicago figurative artist Jim Nutt (b. 1938), who was a member of the group of painters known as The Hairy Who. In "My Pants", Hazlitt experimented with oil paint and assemblage and carefully combined a wide array of elements on the canvas, including an actual pocket from one of his pairs of blue jeans. He has employed beautiful grays, yellows, and reds in composing his painting. A commentary on modern times, the curved, sharp blades symbolize the devastating impact of war, death, and destruction on contemporary society.
