DescriptionAfter an early attempt at a career as a portrait painter, Alfred Cheney Johnston turned to photography. In 1917, he was hired by Florenz Ziegfeld, producer of the Ziegfeld Follies, to photograph their elaborate theatrical productions and talented performers. Johnston also maintained his own commercial photography studio, capturing the images of aspiring actresses, showgirls, and society matrons. These photographs, found after Johnston’s death, were never released for public consumption. With their coiffed styling, these subjects are characteristic of many of Johnston’s “glamour girls.”
