DescriptionSarah Goodwin Austin, daughter of Chick Austin, Wadsworth Atheneum Director from 1927-1944 was a playful and lighthearted individual. Her childhood home was frequented by artists Alexander Calder (1898-1976), Salvador Dalí (1904-1989) and Le Corbusier (1887-1965) where she was introduced to Surrealism, modernism, music, photography and dance at a young age. After moving to New York City in 1960 she focused her attention on art. The self taught artist experimented with whatever materials were at her disposal. In this multi media work Austin combined portraiture, Photostat, wood, Plexiglas and paint to create a multidimensional optical illusion presented in a shadowbox format. This format was also used by artist Joseph Cornell (1903-1972) and favored by Austin.
