DescriptionThe skull, vines and plants are native to the southwest region. While the shirt and pants are exquisitely rendered, the background is roughly textured and abstracted thus creating a tension between the known and the unknown, the defined and the amorphous. The clothing has been worn by the artist and represents very personal elements, signifying his personality and physicality. Yet, because his body is physically absent, the painting is not really a self-portrait but a still life, with objects substituted for flesh.On View
