Description"The Pageant" is indicative of Bosley's loose, expressionistic style, yet the subject matter is unusual compared to the artist's traditional depiction of females and figures in interior spaces. Here, Bosley depicts not one, but three females whose disparate stances create an image of ambiguity and vulnerability. Though the painting's rich, muted colors, subtle treatment of light and loose brushwork exemplify the artist's traditional techniques, he manages to incorporate modernist aesthetics through the more abstract, flat treatment of space. Perhaps "The Pageant" was a means of reconciling Bosley's reticence to accept modernism with his commitment to conventional art forms. On View
