DescriptionAdams’ portraits were known as being highly stylized, containing a personal touch that separated them from the typical high status portraits of the time. He was nicknamed “lightning” by many of his contemporaries, for he often completed portraits in one sitting. Adams typically painted prominent political or social figures; however, he did complete a series of “character” portraits such as “Robert MacDougal”, in which he employed the same stylized and painterly technique. MacDougal was a rugged man, well known for his intimate knowledge of the Adirondack Mountains of New York. On View
