DescriptionOne of the characteristics of Keller’s work that distinguishes him from his contemporaries is his emphasis on environment. Most illustrators of the time gave greater attention to the figures and fashions they chose to depict, while Keller gave equal attention to the subjects’ surroundings. Here, Keller depicts a leisurely afternoon outdoors, perhaps in Central Park, New York. The complex composition allows the eye to wander from the fashionable carriage and riders to the detailed landscape. On View
