DescriptionThe Timer is a preliminary sketch for a painting of two figures published by Scribner's Magazine in June 1879. On the verso is a sketch of an African American youth on horseback that is thought to be a study for The Fairman Rogers Four-in-Hand (1879; Philadelphia Museum of Art). Both works reveal Eakins's commitment to exacting observation.
