DescriptionIn "Swamp Willows", Lawson constructed thick layers of paint like a sculptor molding clay. The style and technique of his paintings are often compared to Claude Monet's late landscapes. Lawson was known for using a variety of materials such as palette knife, trowel and even thumb to build up his surfaces. The tactile quality of the paint undulates over the canvas, mimicking the wind that blows against the trees. The muted, light tones and subtle delineation of form create a quiet, introspective tone for the painting, in contrast to the grainy, hard surface of the paint. On View
