DescriptionThe French Impressionists and their American followers preferred subjects from everyday events, still lifes, and landscapes executed in a colorful, cheerful style of hastily applied brushstrokes that focused on light as the element of paramount importance. Hassam, who had a long and productive career as a teacher and a painter, was among the first and most influential American artists to embrace Impressionism. He studied the optical theories of French chemist Michel Eugène Chevreul (1786-1889) and used only the new paints in tubes. He also studied Japanese prints and experimented with the camera. "Old House" is a classic Impressionist painting of the artist's later period. On View
