DescriptionIn "Off the Trail", Bates employs a somber pallet of muddy greens, browns and salmons, which lends a mysterious and contemplative air to this painting. The work is characterized by sharp perspective, as exhibited in the rendering of the canoe, and exaggerated reflections on the water. Perhaps Bates was looking at Monet's famous "Impression: Sunrise" as a model for this depiction of light on water.
