DescriptionThis scene depicts Branchville with the Danbury hills visible in the background. The Julian Alden Weir family maintained a residence at Branchville and many paintings by brothers John and Julian celebrated the topography of this region of Connecticut. The late Sperry Andrews, who lived in the Weir house until his recent death, wrote in 1986 that the artist "was witness to smoke from a locomotive pushing or pulling passenger coaches up grade to Ridgefield" which explains the movement of the cool white smoke moving from the left side. Although small, Weir's autumn scene is reminiscent of Joseph M.W. Turner's general vivid colors and Romantic panoramic sweep. Also, Turner included stream locomotives in several of his most renowned landscapes.
