Description"View Near Rome" is an arcadian, idealized view of the Roman Campagna (countryside in Italian) seen from the top of a hill or cliff. In the distance, below the mountains, lies a ruined tower and a small hilltop village. In the foreground there is a peasant family and an old man, who stands with a cane resting amidst the lush, dense plants and foliage. Brown remarkably contrasts the darkly shaded trees and vegetation in the foreground with the village and hills in the bright, sunbathed middle-ground and background. The trees and their branches on the right provide a breathtaking, framed vista of the crags and mountain peak in the distance. Like Cole, Brown showcases the sublimity of the landscape and its topography in which man appears small and insignificant. On View
