DescriptionMetcalf, while living in France from 1883-88, visited Algeria and Tunisia late in 1886 and early in 1887. He was beguiled by the exotic people he encountered, ultimately producing seven to eight finished paintings and numerous sketches. Later, he drew upon this cast of characters when painting "The Market of Koussse-Kousse, Tunis", 1887, which was awarded an honorable mention at the prestigious Paris Salon of the following year.On View
