DescriptionAs seen in "Gateway in the Ghetto", Paris, Chamberlain was able to achieve a striking interplay between light and dark, soft and subtle lines, and remarkable textures and depth through his mastery of the drypoint technique, especially in the stark contrast between the murky alleyway and the sun-drenched building in the foreground, the sidewalk, and the courtyard at the end of the old passage. The two men on the sidewalk appear reluctant to enter the alley. Chamberlain created an incredible mood of mystery and uncertainty by juxtaposing the tones and textures of the alley and street. This scene may possibly depict a corner of the medieval Jewish Ghetto in Paris, located in the Marais district of the city.On View
