Description"Ruins at Lee's Mills" is an example of Stuempfig's celebration of the ordinary. Against a backdrop of ruined buildings, most likely factories dating from the 1800s, several teenagers loiter. The day is grey; storm clouds hover. It is a sweltering August day in the city. The artist, like the Italian Renaissance masters whom he studied on his frequent trips to Europe, observed the scene with intensity and clarity of perception. He recorded the details with technical mastery while achieving a Romantic sensibility. At his death he was the leading artist of Philadelphia. On View
