Description"Dough Boy Sitting" is one of many sketches the artist produced while stationed in France during World War I. The doughboy, or American soldier, takes a much-needed respite from combat during the rare moments of leisure on the front. Though the origin of word doughboy is unclear, the term likely arose during the Mexican-American war, when infantry forces were constantly covered with chalky dust from marching through the dry terrain of northern Mexico, giving the men the appearance of unbaked doughOn View
