DescriptionFrom 1890-92, after numerous trips to European countries during the previous decade, Blum finally traveled to the place of his dreams, Japan. The magnificent display of Japanese art and life at the Centennial Exhibition of 1876 in Philadelphia "augmented the wild desire that had grown up in [him] to some day visit this country of art." Although he was sent to the country as a magazine illustrator, his ability as a painter had already been refined through his association with James McNeill Whistler and Frank Duveneck, both of whom he met in Venice, and through his activity as President of the Society of Painters in Pastel. His "Japanese Woman" shows pastel-like crispness of colors in bold brushstrokes that associate him with Impressionism. On View
