DescriptionBirds at Home is part of Julie Blackmon’s playful series entitled Domestic Vacations, which draws inspiration from 17th-century Dutch artist Jan Steen’s (1626-1679) humorous paintings of dysfunctional homes, often referred to as “Jan Steen households.” This photograph depicts a domestic interior unraveling in chaos. By imbuing reality with comical and fantastical elements, the work challenges the viewer to see what the artist refers to as the “mythic amidst the chaos.”
