Description"Barberry Field" was acquired ten years after the Museum's founding in 1903 by the artist's uncle and founder of the Museum, John Butler Talcott. The overcast sky sets the mood and scheme for the painting, helping to create an image of reflection and quiet reserve. While the barren landscape and crumbling wall act as a reminders of ruin and decay, the lone tree along the horizon is an indication of rebirth, if not man's solitude within nature. In recent years the painting has been on loan to the American Ambassador's residence in Paris. On View
