Description"Equivalent" is a collaborative work between Japanese artist/photographer Sachiko Cho (b. 1955) and conceptual artist Sol LeWitt (b. 1928-d. 2007). Cho's simple images of still life object such as an egg and a Chinese take-out container depict elements of her everyday life and environment. LeWitt responds by creating minimalist, glossy and colorful patterns that accentuate the underlying composition and structure of Cho's subjects. Crisp and jewel-like, LeWitt's decisive forms provide a distinct but harmonious interpretation and counterpoint to Cho's soft-focus images.

Equivalent is a juxtaposition of two printing techniques done on a single sheet: Cho's photogravures on the left and LeWitt's linocuts on the right. Photogravure is an intaglio printmaking or photo-mechanical process wherein a copper plate is coated with a light-sensitive gelatin tissue which had been exposed to a film positive, and then etched, resulting in a high quality print that can reproduce the detail and wide range of tones of a photograph. Linocut printmaking is a variant of woodcut printing in which a design is cut into a piece of linoleum with a chisel or other sharp instrument. The sheet is inked with a roller and impressed on the printing surface. Because they coexist on a common background, the two counterparts forge an even closer dialogue between the two mediums and two artists.
