DescriptionGenth's sitters seem to transcend their culture and society. For "Manchu Girl, Peking", the artist positioned her sitter in the typical fashion, painting the subject seated in full-profile and dressed in a highly colorful textured gown. "Manchu Girl, Peking" pushed the theme of the "colorful" stranger to an extreme. The viewer is reminded of a delicate China doll when viewing "Manchu Girl, Peking". Similar to the brilliant colors of the sitter's costume, China, too, was a visual spectacle for Western visitors. On View
