DescriptionSon of the well-known illustrator N.C. Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth is considered one of the foremost American realists. He had been working in tempera about nine years when he painted The Revenant, one of two known self-portraits. Wyeth found egg tempera a more suitable means of relaying his disquieting, sometimes surrealistic scenes that evoke a sense of spiritual unrest. The title of this work suggests the ghostly nature of the figure, accounting for the hazy, ethereal atmosphere. The artist was in a melancholy mood, wandering through the house of his weak and ailing friend Christina Olsen, the subject of his famous Christina's World (Museum of Modern Art, New York) when he opened a door and saw his reflection in the dust-covered mirror.
