DescriptionNaegele was raised in Memphis, where by 1873 he was apprenticed to a tombstone carver. He also painted signs, and through a sign commission he met the marine painter Charles Myles Collier, who gave him art lessons. In 1880 Collier sent Naegele to New York to study with William Sartain and William Merritt Chase. He later settled in Marietta, Georgia, where he died.Farmer with Pumpkin is painted in an academic style that recalls the realism of Sartain's work. Despite his advanced age, the farmer continues harvesting his crop-a powerful image that champions the nobility of labor.
