DescriptionThe Seagull Cottage is a beautiful historic captain’s home built in 1843 that still stands on Monhegan Island, in spite of the power of the weather that sweeps across the island. In this scene, Andrew Winter captures an approaching storm with the cottage directly in its path and the dark hulk of Manana Island, just off the coast of Monhegan, in the middle-ground.A native of Sindi, Estonia, Winter spent his early years as a mate on a variety of American and British ships, an experience that intensified his appreciation for marine scenery and ways of life. Following his seafaring career, Winter became a US citizen in 1921 and enrolled at the National Academy of Design.
After spending a number of years summering on Monhegan Island, Winter settled there as a year-round resident in 1940 and built a studio on a bluff overlooking the ocean. He found a constant source of inspiration in the remote and rugged scenery of the island and its inhabitants.
