DescriptionMonhegan Island, Maine has been a source of inspiration for artists since the 19th century as reflected in Sears Gallagher’s Fish Beach, Monhegan. Fish Beach is little changed today from the scene Gallagher created. Lying beyond Fish Beach, in the middle ground, are the colorful rocks of Manana Island, just off the shore, helping to create a safe anchorage for the fishing boats. Gallagher’s watercolor is characterized by vibrant green, blue, and red hues that enliven the picture.

A painter and etcher, Gallagher was born in Boston in 1869 and studied with Samuel Peter Rolt Triscott (1846-1925) in the 1880’s. It was Triscott who introduced Gallagher to Monhegan Island. Beginning in 1898, Gallagher summered on the island annually, capturing the island’s beautiful and dramatic scenery for over 50 years.
